Typography: Shameless Use of Free Fonts for Jodhaa Akbar!

Usually, for big budget movies, the producers opt for designing fonts to show the title and the grandeur of the film. Jodhaa Akbar is a big budget hindi feature film yet to be released. But, the design of the promos and the fonts used are really disappointing. There’s nothing terrible than using famous and widely used fonts in designing and the titles designed for Jodhaa Akbar are as appalling!

Legende is Ernst Schneidler’s classic font and a free variation for this is widely available on the internet viz., Aladdin. Caliph is another variant of Legende. The designer of Jodhaa Akbar promos (donno who!) modified Aladdin (or Caliph or Legende) to create the title of the film! The ‘J’ and ‘d’ are modified a li’l bit (or is there another variant available?!) but in ‘Akbar’ the font is intact!

Leave alone the Aladdin font. It’s almost worst to use a font used for another feature film. ‘Ringbearer font’ is the official font for the titles of Lord of the Rings movie trilogy. In Jodhaa Akbar promos, you can easily see that Ringbearer has been used as the secondary font. It is used widely in the design of the audio CD covers.

  1. I think the number of people who may be able to even identify what you are suggesting is only a few hundreds, so the people involved haven’t bothered to concentrate on it. Ya, you are right…they could have spent some money on this, when they are making such a big budget movie.

How are you ? Where are you studying now ?

  2. Keeping in view how Design has evolved in India, what you say is true. But, using the official font of another famous movie viz., ‘Lord Of The Rings’ is not only unethical but also stupid.

    Thanks for your comment! :)
